CPNRE vs REx-PN: Which Practical Nurse Exam Applies?
A quick way to distinguish the two Canadian practical-nurse registration examinations.
The practical-nurse exam depends on the regulator. CPNRE and REx-PN are different tests; do not choose one solely because you want to work in Canada.
Start here
Ontario refers to practical nurses as RPNs and British Columbia uses LPN. These regulators direct many new candidates to the REx-PN. Other jurisdictions may use the CPNRE. Individual exemptions and applicant routes vary.
What to do next
First identify the province and professional title. Then read the regulator’s current registration page and wait for its eligibility or exam direction. Only then choose a test plan and course.
Prepare with a plan
If you have already been licensed elsewhere, ask the receiving regulator how prior registration affects your route. Avoid assuming that exam rules for first-time applicants automatically apply to you.
