Australia Nursing OBA: Where NCLEX-RN and OSCE Fit
A clear overview of the assessment pathway for some internationally qualified nurses.
Some internationally qualified nurses are assigned an outcomes-based assessment (OBA) by Australia’s nursing regulator. For registered nurses in that stream, preparation may include an NCLEX-RN cognitive exam and a clinical assessment.
Start here
Begin with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia/Ahpra self-check. Your qualification and registration history affect the assessment stream, and not every applicant follows the same steps.
What to do next
If assigned OBA, read the regulator’s current instructions for both knowledge and clinical assessment. Build separate plans: exam-style clinical judgment for the cognitive component and structured safe-care practice for the clinical component.
Prepare with a plan
Do not treat a course enrolment or exam pass as an automatic registration decision. The regulator evaluates the whole application, including mandatory standards.
